Garages are typically used for storing items as well as vehicles. If your garage is damp due to humidity, there is a risk for items in storage to become damaged or ruined. It is important to reduce the humidity in your garage as much as possible. Ways to do this include opening windows to allow increased air flow and organize items in the garage to keep things off of the floor. Remember that too much humidity can lead to mold, which is a very serious issue.

Use caulk to seal cracks that are in your driveway or in the garage. Sealing these cracks helps to prevent more water from seeping into the driveway or garage. Before the rainy season begins, it is essential to repair any cracks. It will not only keep the garage drier, it will also improve the appearance of your driveway and garage. Keeping your garage as dry as possible is imperative to keeping it well maintained.

2. Check The Windows And Insulate Them

Check your garage windows consistently for any leaks, gaps, loose seals or other damage. This is especially important to make sure that your windows are undamaged in order to prevent pests from entering inside. You will also need to make sure that the windows are properly insulated. Wash them and make sure that they are well maintained as they are essential to keeping your garage dry and at a consistent temperature.

3. Turn Up The Heat

During the winter months, turn up the thermostat to a higher temperature. The warmer it is inside of the garage, the less chance there will be of moisture remaining. Keeping the garage consistently warm will dry out any wet spots, items or vehicles.

4. Install an Exhaust Fan

There are many reasons to install an exhaust fan in your garage, such as providing better air ventilation for those that use the garage as an area for working on projects or working with paint. It also helps to prevent carbon monoxide from forming. But it is also a good idea to install one as a way to keep the air circulating and preventing moisture from staying in the garage.

5. Make Sure The Garage Doors Shut Tightly

A garage door that does not shut properly could mean that it was improperly installed or that it has been misaligned with the track. If the garage door has a gap, water could leak inside, making a mess of the items stored. Your garage door should shut tightly so that the seal is tight, keeping out unwanted moisture and other critters. If you are unsure if the seal is tight, shine a flashlight underneath the door and have someone on the other side to determine if they can see any light. If there is an issue with the seal, it needs to be replaced.

6. Use A Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers work wonderfully in keeping the humidity low as it will eliminate it from the air. As a result, the dampness is kept at a minimum. To properly install a dehumidifier, you will need to have a hose running from the machine into a sump pump or a drain. With one in your garage, you can be assured of not only less humidity in the air, but also less mold, mildew, rust and other signs of too much moisture in the air.

By following some or all of these tips, you have a much higher chance of keeping your garage free of moisture and humidity. By doing this, you are keeping your vehicles and other possessions safe from rust, mold or mildew.
