A power inverter, or inverter, is an electronic device or circuitry that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). The input voltage, output voltage and frequency, and overall power handling depend on the design of the specific device or circuitry. The inverter does not produce any power; the DC source provides the power.
A power inverter can be entirely electronic or a combination of mechanical effects (such as a rotary apparatus) and electronic circuitry. Static inverters do not use moving parts in the conversion process.
The inverter functions to change the direct current (DC) on the battery into an alternating current (AC), and then this alternating current is used by an electric motor. In addition, the inverter on an electric car can change the AC when regenerative braking to DC and then recharge the battery. The type of inverter used in some electric car models is the bi-directional inverter category.
